Solar companies have reported losses for some time now, but LDK Solar has more debt than most companies, and won't be able to survive with such feeble numbers. At the end of 2012, debt stood at $2.8 billion, and we know now that the company ran out of cash just this week. There's no way LDK Solar can survive on just $135.9 million in quarterly revenue and that kind of debt level. A problem across solar High debt loads and feeble margins aren't a challenge faced by LDK Solar alone. Suntech Power gave in to these pressures last month, defaulting on its own debt. Yingli Green Energy (NYSE: YGE  ) is now the most indebted Chinese solar company, with $2.5 billion in debt, and I wouldn't doubt if they're not far behind LDK and Suntech. The defaults of Suntech and LDK has to be concerning for all of Chinese solar, especially if banks don't keep the free flow of funds that have powered a rapid expansion in production. Balance sheets matter
What's becoming clearer and clearer every quarter is that balance sheets matter, not just for investors, but also for solar installers. Solar modules come with warranties, sometimes stretching as long as 25 years, and if a customer questions whether a company will be around in only a year or two, they may choose another option. Since Chinese modules vary very little from a performance perspective, the customer may choose a better-capitalized company like JinkoSolar instead of Yingli or LDK, or even move to a U.S. company like First Solar (NASDAQ: FSLR  ) or SunPower (NASDAQ: SPWR  ) . As financial conditions get worse at these companies more and more customers leave and the problems get worse, creating a downward spiral. LDK and Suntech are the poster children for this and are a major reason investors need to stick with quality in solar. I've been down on LDK Solar since I began predicting its failure in 2011. It's a sign that relief could be coming for tense investors in Chinese solar firms, one that sent shares of major solar companies surging earlier in the week. Yingli Green Energy Holdings's (NYSE: YGE  ) stock surged by more than 13% on Friday, part of an 18% gain for the week. With more than 50% of total Chinese solar exports going to Europe, Yingli and other solar rivals are reliant on the EU's willingness to deal with Beijing in order to avoid costly tariffs.

  • [By Travis Hoium]

Europe cuts solar lifeline -- solar lives on
Europe has been even more aggressive cutting subsidies the solar industry once relied on. Germany began 2011 with feed-in tariffs that ranged from 0.29 euros per kilowatt-hour for a rooftop system to 0.21 euros per kW-hr for a large ground-mounted system. Today, a rooftop system will earn 0.165 euros per kW-hr and a utility scale system will earn 0.195 euros per kW-hr. The driver of feed-in tariff reductions is the rapidly falling cost of solar. We talk about how the flood of cheap Chinese panels affect prices and competition here in the U.S., but solar giants Yingli Green Energy (NYSE: YGE  ) and Trina Solar (NYSE: TSL  ) count on Europe for most of their demand, and they're responsible for a lot of the drop in costs there.

Is SunPower's differentiated technology a sustainable competitive advantage?
My investment thesis on SunPower centers on the company's efficiency lead over modules from China and virtually everyone else in solar. This lead should allow SunPower to install residential and commercial systems for a lower cost of energy than competitors, which will lead to higher margins. But GT Advanced Technologies (NASDAQ: GTAT  ) says it is releasing equipment this year that will allow for the mass production of cells comparable to SunPower's, and First Solar (NASDAQ: FSLR  ) recently bought TetraSun, a high-efficiency solar producer. So, can SunPower maintain it's current lead given these new technologies and any number of new entrants into the market?

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Travis Hoium]

Solar tariffs in Europe started at a low 11% rate last week, but if a deal between Europe, China, and even the U.S. isn't reached by Aug. 6 then they could go up to as much as 68%. This is clearly a negative development for Chinese manufacturers like Yingli Green Energy (NYSE: YGE  ) , LDK Solar (NYSE: LDK  ) , and Trina Solar (NYSE: TSL  ) , but it's not necessarily good for U.S. companies either. First Solar (NASDAQ: FSLR  ) has little presence in Europe right now and SunPower (NASDAQ: SPWR  ) won't see much benefit from tariffs either. In the end, tariffs are bad for nearly everyone, a sentiment Travis Hoium covers in the video below.

How Inflation Will Cut Your Taxes in 2014

American currency against an American flag backdropAlamy

Most of the time, inflation is one of the most serious financial threats people face, propelling slow but steady price increases that erode the purchasing power of your savings and make it harder to make ends meet. But when it comes to your taxes, inflation's bite need not be too painful: The government makes annual adjustments to the tax code to reflect the higher cost of living, which should help you save on your taxes in 2014. 1. Higher Standard Deductions The standard deduction allows taxpayers to earn income up to a certain amount without paying any taxes -- and without going to the trouble of itemizing deductions. For 2014, the figure for single filers will rise by $100 to $6,200, with joint filers getting a $200 increase to $12,400. Those who qualify as heads of household split the difference, with their standard deduction jumping $150 to $9,100. Depending on your filing status and tax bracket, these increases could save you anywhere from $10 to $80 on your 2014 tax return. 2. Higher Personal Exemptions Most taxpayers get to take a personal exemption for each member of their families, including dependents. The personal exemption amount will climb by $50 to $3,950 in 2014. The increase could boost tax savings anywhere from $5 to $20 per person depending on your tax bracket, although high-income taxpayers begin to have personal exemptions phased out once their income goes above certain levels. 3. Higher Tax Brackets The boundaries of the various tax brackets get an inflation adjustment in 2014, allowing taxpayers to earn more money while getting taxed at a lower rate. For instance, single filers will see the upper end of the 10 percent tax bracket rise from $8,925 to $9,075, while the top of the 15 percent tax bracket will rise from $36,250 to $36,900. By taxing more of your income at lower rates, these shifts will produce tax savings of $72.50 for a single filer earning $40,000 in taxable income. Higher-end earners will reap more substantial savings: Joint filers with taxable income of $250,000 will see a drop of more than $400 in their taxes. 4. Higher Earned Income Tax Credits Millions of working low-income taxpayers are eligible to receive the Earned Income Tax Credit. The maximum credit amount rises $99 in 2014 for joint filers with three or more qualifying children, with an $88 increase for those with two children, $54 for one-child families, and $9 for eligible individuals with no children. 5. Higher Exclusions for Foreign Workers If you work abroad, you're entitled to exclude money you earn in wages or salaries from your foreign job. The amount of money you're able to exclude will rise in 2014 by $1,600 to $99,200, producing savings of $160 to $640 depending on your tax bracket. The exclusion is designed to offset the taxes that foreign workers typically pay in the countries in which they work. 6. Higher Exemptions for Alternative Minimum Tax The Alternative Minimum Tax was originally designed to apply only to the richest taxpayers -- its purpose being to prevent the wealthy from gaming the system and paying no taxes at all. But over time, thanks to inflation, the tax gradually started capturing more upper-middle-class taxpayers, especially in states that have high taxes that aren't deductible for AMT purposes. In 2014, the exemption amount of AMT will rise by $900 to $52,800 for single filers and by $1,300 to $82,100 for joint filers. With AMT rates at 26 percent and 28 percent, those increases can save between $234 and $364 in potential AMT liability. These are just a sampling of the many ways that cost-of-living inflation adjustments will lower taxes for millions of Americans. For more information, be sure to visit the IRS website and get the comprehensive list of inflation adjustments for 2014.

HNI Corp.(HNI) said it plans to close its Midwest Folding Products facility as part of an ongoing cost-cutting effort. The Iowa office-furniture maker said it would consolidate the Chicago production into an existing education-furniture manufacturing facility and estimated it would save $2.3 million a year starting in 2015.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Last week, HNI Corp. (HNI) beat earnings forecasts and promptly fell 3.4%. Raymond James, however, thinks the selloff was undeserved and raised its r! ating on ! the office-furniture maker, helping HNI Corp. to make back its loss.

Raymond James analysts Budd Bugatch and Bobby Griffin explain why they upgraded HNI Corp.:

We are upgrading HNI to Outperform from a Market Perform rating and establishing a $36.00 price target following the company's 1Q14 earnings release and management conference call. As stated in an earlier note, HNI delivered a "clean" 1Q14 EPS beat; and we are puzzled by Thursday's trading activity. HNI historically trades at a premium to the office furniture peer group, but following the shares' recent pullback (down ~3.5% on Thursday before the Good Friday holiday and down 14% YTD compared to +0.8% for the SPX YTD), this is no longer the case and gives us reason for a more constructive rating.

Shares of HNI Corp. have gained 4.9% to $35.17 at 1:45 p.m., while Steelcase (SCS) has risen 0.8% to $16.93, Knoll (KNL) has advanced 2.5% to $18.74 and Herman Miller (MLHR) has ticked up 0.3% to $30.57.

West Marine (Nasdaq: WMAR) is an undervalued retailer.  The company is going through a change in focus from a bricks and mortar boat product retailer to a fully integrated retail and wholesale business through bricks and clicks, targeting the boating and water enthusiast customer.   Recent results have been affected by a severe rainy and cool spring which hurt boat usage and delayed the start of the season.  The company has accelerated cash investments to build larger more productive stores and expand its ecommerce abilities, consequently affecting free cash flow short term.  The stock lacks sponsorship as there is only one research report written on the company by a small boutique firm.  The stock trades at only book value despite the company being the leading industry player with a solid balance sheet and significant net cash position.

What: Shares of the Vitamin Shoppe (NYSE: VSI  ) were looking under the weather today, falling as much as 10% after a disappointing earnings report.

  • [By John Udovich]

Vitamin Shoppe Inc (NYSE: VSI), Books-A-Million, Inc (NASDAQ: BAMM) and Perfumania Holdings, Inc (NASDAQ: PERF) have the dubious distinction of beingthe worst performing small capspecialty retail stocks for this year (according to Finviz.com) with losses of 4.85% and3% and a gain of 0.61%, respectively, since the start of the year (See my previous article: This Year Best Performing Small Cap Specialty Retail Stocks? UNTD, TA & HZO). I should mention that the definition of specialty retail stocks might vary from one stock screener to another, but what clear is that these three small cap retail stocks have been heading in the wrong direction for investors for much of this year. With that in mind, what sort of performance should investors expect from these small cap specialty retail stocks on Black Friday and for the all important holiday season? Here is what you need to be aware of:

  • [By Brian Pacampara]

Sales growth this last quarter was up only about 6%, but net income per share was up 21%. They pay a $0.60 dividend which gives them a dividend yield of 1.4%. Their cash flow yield is 4.6%, so they could easily raise their dividend. They are by far the leader in a very fragmented industry. I believe both [Vitamin Shoppe (NYSE: VSI  ) ] and GNC will do well and I think they may make a fair pairing in a portfolio. Stability versus growth.

They do have $1.1 billion in debt. But they generate about $200 million in cash flow a year and they have $174 million in cash, so that shouldn't be a problem. Their cash flow is very high, so in my opinion, is reason enough to believe they will beat the S&P 500 over the next ten years.

  • [By Ben Levisohn]

Barclays upgraded share s of Vitamin Shoppe (VSI) today, expressing a confidence in management that was, well, heartwarming.

Barclays’ analysts Meredith Adler and Sean Kras call Vitamin Shoppe’s management team “thoughtful, deliberate and disciplined” and praise their ability to diversify the business. As a result, they upgraded Vitamin Shoppe to Overweight from Equal Weight two days after Vitamin Shoppe released its earnings.

But Adler and Kras also spent a good number of words explaining what Vitamin Shoppe isn’t–specifically, it’s not GNC Holdings (GNC):

[Vitamin Shoppe] said it saw no fundamental change in consumer demand, nor did it feel much pressure from the bad media reports about things like multi-vitamins and fish oil, unlike GNC. [Vitamin Shoppe] has a much broader offering than GNC, however, so weakness in any one category rarely has a major impact on[Vitamin Shoppe's] overall sales the way it does at GNC. Conversely, it benefits less when there are few very successful products. For example, diet is a far smaller part of the sales mix at[Vitamin Shoppe] than at GNC. Last year diet had some strong products, but this year there are fewer. GNC comps were stronger than[Vitamin Shoppe's] last year, but we like the stability of[Vitamin Shoppe's] business, especially in the current environment.

Shares of Vitamin Shoppe have gained 1.8% to $43.42 at 3:24 p.m., while GNC has risen 0.8% to $37.43.

As we head towards Black Friday, small cap specialty retail stocks United Online, Inc (NASDAQ: UNTD), TravelCenters of America LLC (NYSE: TA) and MarineMax, Inc (NYSE: HZO) have the distinction of being the best performing small capspecialty retail stocks for this year (according to Finviz.com) with gains of 181.2%, 123.8% and 71.8%, respectively. With those returns in mind, what are these small cap specialty retail stocks doing right and will the performance last through the all important holiday season? Here is what new and existing investors and traders alike need to know or consider:

United Online, Inc.A provider of consumer products and services over the Internet, United Online Content & Media segment services are online nostalgia (Memory Lane) and online loyalty marketing (MyPoints) while itsprimary Communications segment services are Internet access and email (NetZero and Juno). The reason United Online is among thebest performing specialty retail stocks for this year in various stock screening tools like Finviz.comis actually misleading as the company has just completed the spin offof subsidiary FTD Companies, a floral and gifts products company acquired in August 2008 for $441 million, asFTD Companies Inc (NASDAQ: FTD) where United Online shareholders received one share of FTD common stock for every five shares of United Online common stock they hold. In addition, United Online completedaone-for-seven reverse stock split of United Online shares. On Tuesday, small cap United Online, Inc fell 1.01% to $15.72 (UNTD has a 52 week trading range of $11.65 to $62.30 a share) for a market cap of $207.79 million plus the stock is up 181.2% since the start of the year and up 182.2% over the past five years. Meanwhile, the FTD Companies Incnow has amarket cap of $611.60 and the stock is up almost 6% since October.

Advisors' Opinion:

Margins matter. The more Vitacost.com (Nasdaq: VITC  ) keeps of each buck it earns in revenue, the more money it has to invest in growth, fund new strategic plans, or (gasp!) distribute to shareholders. Healthy margins often separate pretenders from the best stocks in the market. That's why we check up on margins at least once a quarter in this series. I'm looking for the absolute numbers, so I can compare them to current and potential competitors, and any trend that may tell me how strong Vitacost.com's competitive position could be.

We expect the RBA will need to keep policy accommodative over the cyclical horizon and 2014 will be a critical transition year for the Australian economy.Over the year through September 2013, real growth in business investment outside the mining sector slowed to almost zero (0.5% to be precise, as shown in Figure 1). Why has Australia Inc. invested so little into its businesses this year? As RBA Deputy Governor Philip Lowe commented in a speech in late October, the lack of business investment in recent years is actually a global phenomenon across the developed world.Although hard to quantify, this nvestment drought,as Lowe described it, has likely been influenced by a lingering risk aversion after the financial crisis as well as the political uncertainty that has been common in many developed countries over the past few years. But in Australia another variable has also been restraining non-mining capital expenditure, and that is the elevated exchange rate.As Figure 1 shows, changes in the real trade-weighted exchange rate have historically led changes in non-mining business investment. As the real exchange rate appreciates, domestic products and services become less competitive relative to foreign goods and services, both at home and abroad. And of course, the reverse is true w

MutualFirst Financial (MFSF) makes the list, trading at 80% of book value and yielding 1.61%. The bank has total assets of about $1.4 billion and is located in Muncie, Ind. Like a lot of small banks today, the story here is one of steady credit improvement and compressed net interest margins. It is one of many smaller institutions that I think will eventually be taken over; the current regulatory climate simply does not favor little banks. Insiders own about 10% of the stock, so they are invested in the idea of a much higher stock price.

10 Best Internet Stocks To Watch For 2015

10 Best Internet Stocks To Watch For 2015: CYNK Technology Corp (CYNK)

Cynk Technology Corp., formerly Introbuzz, Inc., is a development stage-company. The Company intends to develop a social network business. Social networks are Web based services that allow individuals to post a profile and link their profile to other friends and organizations.

The Company intends to develop a database of professional and other business persons, as well as other interested persons in providing and utilizing contacts. As of November 14, 2012, the Company had not generated any revenue.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By WWW.DAILYFINANCE.COM]

CYNK Technology (CYNK), the mysterious over-the-counter stock that at one point broke a $6 billion market cap, dropped roughly 80 percent in its first trades after a Securities and Exchange Commission halt. The SEC halted CYNK for two weeks following a massive rise in the stock's value -- it had been worth only a few cents per share in June, but it jumped above $21 on July 10. The Belize-based CYNK Technology supposedly operates a social networking site, but filings indicate it only has one employee and virtually no assets. Experts told CNBC the week of the SEC halt that they expected CYNK to fall precipitously after reopening, and its first day of trading is proving those predictions correct. When it was halted, the stock was worth just less than $14 per share, and is now below $3 a share after briefly hovering around $5 earlier Friday morning. An OTC Markets spokeswoman told Reuters that CYNK's shares were not trading on its platform, but were occurring over the phone. Earlier this week Reuters reported that OTC's CEO did not expect CYNK to trade on its platform at all after reopening, as no brokerages would file the required paperwork for the stock to trade on their exchanges. An SEC spokesman said that the organization cannot comment on the! status of a company after a suspension period ends, citing an online explanation of the process. That document notes that broker-dealers may not solicit investors to trade the previously suspended OTC stock until they satisfy several regulatory requirements. The SEC warned, however, that "unsolicited" trading may occur after a reopening -- as CYNK is now seeing -- but "even though such trading is allowed, it can be very risky for investors without current and reliable information about the company."

Consumers and cooks have an expectation that mayonnaise should both taste and perform like mayonnaise.

"Consumers and cooks have an expectation that mayonnaise should both taste and perform like mayonnaise. Just Mayo does neither," the complaint states, noting that the Hampton Creek product's oils separate when heated. Unilever holds the biggest share of the U.S. mayonnaise market, which is estimated to be worth $2 billion annually, according to market-research firm Euromonitor. That's more than twice the size of the ketchup market. Hampton Creek didn't return calls from The Associated Press seeking comment Tuesday morning. The company told The Wall Street Journal that it doesn't mislead consumers because it advertises the absence of eggs as a benefit. But a marketing professor hired by Unilever to survey consumers found in an online survey that more than half of thought Just Mayo was may! onnaise when they saw the label. The professor said in a document filed last week that 822 consumers participated in the research. Just Mayo is the first product from Hampton Creek, a San Francisco-based startup that touts the backing of Microsoft (MSFT) founder Bill Gates and Li Ka-shing, Asia's wealthiest person. Just Mayo is available at Dollar Tree (DLTR), Whole Foods Market (WFM) and Kroger (KR) stores, among other locations. Hellmann's celebrated its 100th anniversary last year. Mayonnaise originated in France in the 1700s, when a chef seeking to make a creamy sauce combined oil and egg yolks.

Key Takeaways from Home Improvement Retailer Lowe’s Second Quarter Results

The second largest home improvement retailer, Lowe (LOW), reported its second quarter earnings (ended August 1), beating top and bottom-line expectations. Sales, same-store sales, net earnings, and guidance showed decent year-over-year gains and the management is quite upbeat about Lowe's performance. For gaining better insight, let's jump directly to the numbers and take a look at the major takeaways.

Revenue climbs

As the U.S. housing industry is on the path of revival, it is having a positive impact on home improvement retailers like Lowe that saw its revenue climb 5.7% to $16.6 billion, from $15.7 billion a year ago. The reported revenue met the Bloomberg analysts' estimate for the quarter. Comparable sales for the quarter have improved 4.4%, up 0.3% from that expected by analysts based on estimates compiled by the Consensus Metrix.

As on August 1, Lowe had 1,837 home improvement and hardware stores operational in U.S., Canada and Mexico. The favorable weather conditions during the second quarter aided in improving sales at these conventional stores. CEO Robert A. Niblock stated –"I would like to thank our employees for their hard work during our peak selling season, which helped us deliver solid results for the second quarter. We were able to recover most of the outdoor product sales missed in the first quarter due to unfavorable weather conditions."

Company sources claim that there was a recovery noticed in "most of the outdoor product sales" it had missed upon due to the severe winter in the first quarter. Even the rising real-estate prices served as a key factor to better growth in this quarter, as rising values drive consumers to spend more on their homes.

According to the U.S. commerce department, construction activity has jumped 15.7% in July this year after eight months of straight decline, indicating a pick-up in home building. Also as home improvement spending is slated to continue in the U.S. with income of consumers growing higher along with enhanced job security, retailers like Lowe and Home Depot will certainly see better times in the quarters ahead.

Earnings improve and Investors get the cherry

The quarter's net income grew 10.4% year over year to $1.04 billion. Earnings per share (EPS) of $1.04 increased 18.2% from $0.88 in the year ago quarter and was $0.01 per share above the Bloomberg expectations. The improvement was on account of higher revenue, cost reductions and continuous share buybacks.

During the quarter Lowe generated $3.9 billion operating cash flow and free cash flow of $3.5 billion. The company bought back shares worth $1.1 billion in the second quarter and thus adding to investors delight. Apart from this, Lowe also paid $183 million as dividends. For the six month period, the company has already repurchased $2 billion of stock and has paid $369 million as dividends.

Future outlook remains firm

Management has reduced the full-year sales guidance to 4.5% from the previous forecast of 5%. The second quarter witnessed weaker than anticipated sales of air conditioners as summer was relatively cooler, pushing the management to trim the revenue outlook.

The reduced sales guidance of Lowe did come as a surprise and was pretty contrasting to what the home improvement giant Home Depot (HD) recently shared, where it maintained the sales guidance at 4.8% for the fiscal year. Despite lowering guidance, Lowe believes in the long term prospects of the market and has plans of adding 10 home improvement and 5 hardware stores to its total store count by this fiscal year.

The management maintained the earnings guidance at $2.63 per share for the entire fiscal year (ending January 2015), and spoke about cost reductions and productivity gains that will support earnings for the fiscal year. Lowe will also buy back a total of $3.4 billion of stock during the fiscal year which will boost its earnings.

Rounding up

Lowe might not be on an exclusive growth trajectory, but the management is optimistic of the market revival that could bolster sales in the coming quarters. However, to keep an uptick in sales and to play safe, the management has taken a cautious stand in terms of revenue expectations for the remaining fiscal year. There is a lot to witness in the upcoming quarters and let's stay tuned and keep watching.

Top High Tech Companies To Own For 2014

As the overall market takes a breather from its three-day rally, investors appear to be heading into the weekend in the red. So too is Bank of America (NYSE: BAC  ) this morning, down 1.1% at 10:30 a.m. EDT. Though it may be following the pack as we close out the quarter, some new legal developments may also be pushing the bank further into negative territory.

Good news first
In a move that will likely help the bank stay away from litigation, a group of state and federal officials have notified the New York Attorney General's office that no enforcement action will be taken against B of A orWells Fargo (NYSE: WFC  ) for violations of last year's $25 billion mortgage settlement terms. The NYAG had notified the states and the settlement's overseer that it intended to file suit against the banks for the violations, but it had been temporarily stymied by the banks' request for time to cure the alleged missteps.

Now, the stance of the federal and state parties that there will be no enforcement action takes some of the wing out from beneath the AG's wings. The latest from the Attorney General's office had cited numerous violations as reported by these other states as reason to press forward with the intended suit. But the current stance of the states and federal parties is to allow the banks to remedy the violations with homeowners directly, with the belief that reform of the process will come faster if litigation is avoided.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

Nvidia Corp. (NVDA) is having a good run in 2014 – since the calendar flipped to January, shares of the graphics card maker have rallied 18%, quadrupling the gains investors have gotten from the S&P 500 over the same stretch. And Nvidia could be primed for more of the same thanks to a new product pipeline and a massive cash position.

Following AMD's (AMD acquisition of ATI Technologies in 2006, Nvidia became the sole pure-play graphics chipmaker on the market. And as PCs largely become commoditized, Nvidia remains one of a few component makers that's able to still earn deep margins for its efforts; last quarter net profit margins clocked in at 12.4%. But Nvidia is branching out beyond graphics cards too – it's investing heavily in supercomputing R&D, as well as server and mobile graphics offerings. And new consumer products like the SHIELD portable gaming device are putting new markets on Nvidia's radar.

From a financial standpoint, NVDA is in stellar shape, with $3 billion in net cash. That's enough cash to cover 29% of the firm's current market cap – that also drops NVDA's ex-cash P/E ratio down to 15.4. That's 40% lower than the earnings multiple on the average technology sector stock today...

  • [By Evan Niu, CFA]

The first half of 2013 has been relatively slow forNVIDIA (NASDAQ: NVDA  ) , with shares mostly keeping pace with the broader market. This is expected, as the company made the conscious decision to delay the Tegra 4 time frame in order to focus on Tegra 4i. The graphics business continues to hold up admirably in the face of a slow PC market, as NVIDIA's target gamer market remains resilient.
