Hot Net Payout Yield Stocks To Invest In 2014

Although business headlines still tout earnings numbers, many investors have moved past net earnings as a measure of a company's economic output. That's because earnings are very often less trustworthy than cash flow, since earnings are more open to manipulation based on dubious judgment calls.

Earnings' unreliability is one of the reasons Foolish investors often flip straight past the income statement to check the cash flow statement. In general, by taking a close look at the cash moving in and out of the business, you can better understand whether the last batch of earnings brought money into the company, or merely disguised a cash gusher with a pretty headline.

Calling all cash flows
When you are trying to buy the market's best stocks, it's worth checking up on your companies' free cash flow once a quarter or so, to see whether it bears any relationship to the net income in the headlines. That's what we do with this series. Today, we're checking in on Eaton Vance (NYSE: EV  ) , whose recent revenue and earnings are plotted below.

Still, McDonald's has had to deal with several new problems recently. An outbreak of avian flu in China has hurt both McDonald's and the KFC unit of Yum! Brands (NYSE: YUM  ) , as fears of contaminated chicken keep patrons away. The hit will be bigger for Yum!, as it has almost 6,000 stores in China compared to a target of 2,000 by the end of the year for McDonald's, but McDonald's could still see pressure from the outbreak. Meanwhile, in the U.S., workers held a strike to protest low pay for fast-food workers, although it's unclear whether labor groups remain strong enough to have an impact on big employers like McDonald's. A rise in customer service complaints has also raised questions about whether premium beverages take too long to make and hold up orders. Given the fact that McDonald's owed much of its growth in recent years to taking business from premium-coffee giant Starbucks (NASDAQ: SBUX  ) , a reversal of its strategy there could hurt McDonald's but help Starbucks regain even more of its core business.

Advisors' Opinion:

On Friday, Honeywell (NYSE: HON  ) will release its latest quarterly results. The key to making smart investment decisions on stocks reporting earnings is to anticipate how they'll do before they announce results, leaving you fully prepared to respond quickly to whatever inevitable surprises arise. That way, you'll be less likely to make an uninformed knee-jerk reaction to news that turns out to be exactly the wrong move.

  • [By Rich Smith]

Honeywell's (NYSE: HON  ) earnings report Friday was quickly overshadowed by news reports that one of its devices, an emergency locator transmitter, may be linked to the on-ground fire that broke out in an Ethiopian Airlines-operated Boeing (NYSE: BA  ) 787 at Heathrow Airport last week.

  • [By Rich Smith]

And don't forget about the allies
Foreign buyers of U.S. military equipment were behind a number of contracts awarded last week. Among them:

Honeywell (NYSE: HON  ) won one of the week's biggest contracts to support the militaries of U.S. allies Australia, Morocco, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates. Honeywell will be shipping out to these countries a total of 440 T55-GA-714A engines and 365 T55-GA-714A engine fielding kits. Among other aircraft, the T55-GA-714A engine is used to power CH-47 Chinook transport helicopters, an aircraft that is present in (or, in the case of Turkey, on order by) the militaries of all four countries. The total value of this contract modification to Honeywell will be nearly $122 million. Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT  ) won a $50 million contract to supply the militaries of South Korea and Finland with M934E6 and M934E7 warhead fuses for use with these countries' arsenals of Stinger shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missiles (often called "MANPADS," short for man-portable air defense systems). Deliveries of the fuses will continue through Aug. 25, 2018. Textron's (NYSE: TXT  ) Cessna unit won a $64 million contract to provide "support" and training services to Afghan pilots and mechanics servicing 26 C-208B "Caravan" and six T-182T "Skylane" utility aircraft through based at Kabul International Airport, Kandahar Air Base, and Shindand Air Base in Afghanistan through Jan. 31, 2016.

    Opportunities on the horizon
So much for the contracts everyone knows about. Now, let's end last week's roundup with one contract that you may not yet have heard of.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Seth Jayson]

Margins matter. The more Anaren (Nasdaq: ANEN  ) keeps of each buck it earns in revenue, the more money it has to invest in growth, fund new strategic plans, or (gasp!) distribute to shareholders. Healthy margins often separate pretenders from the best stocks in the market. That's why we check up on margins at least once a quarter in this series. I'm looking for the absolute numbers, so I can compare them to current and potential competitors, and any trend that may tell me how strong Anaren's competitive position could be.

  • [By Richard Moroney]

Anaren (ANEN), a leading maker of microwave components for wireless communications and defense electronics, has bright growth prospects.

The space and defense division is benefiting from strong demand for radar equipment. The wireless division is benefiting from increased demand for cellular infrastructure equipment.

  • [By Steve Symington]

iRobot (NASDAQ: IRBT  ) may be known best for its consumer-focused Roomba vacuums and military-centric PackBots, but this small-cap company has bigger things in mind for the field of robotics.

  • [By Matt Krantz]

But for investors looking to bet on the rise of the machine, there aren't many options. Perhaps the closest company to a pure-play robotic stock is iRobot (symbol: IRBT). The maker of the ubiquitous Roomba vacuum cleaner continues to broaden the range of robots it makes and improve the ones it already sells.

  • [By Steve Symington]

As if iRobot's (NASDAQ: IRBT  ) strong first quarter results weren't enough, shares of the robot makerrose more than 3% yesterday and touched a new 52-week high after the companyannounced the first official adopters of its RP-VITA medical telepresence robots.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Markos Kaminis]

Whether the stock is overvalued or not does not matter at this point, because an impact to its subscriber base due to the data sharing news would probably change market expectations for the company's operations and affect both earnings estimates and valuation multiples. It would probably drive the shares lower in my view, and I see no reason to risk that by holding the stock. Long-term holders, of course, have tax considerations to consider, and the news is still filing out. If Verizon's peers are also implicated clearly, perhaps with the aid of a Verizon PR push, this issue would be effectively mitigated. Though even in that case, there could be market share loss by all major American firms, with companies like T-Mobile US (TMUS) and Virgin Media (VMED) benefiting, whether they have also been involved or not. In any event, for new stakeholders, or those willing to deal with tax implications; or for those interested in a potential short opportunity, I would sell the stock today. I see no reason to bear risk while this issue and its implications are still unraveling, and while VZ has thus far not been significantly discounted for it.
