Top Energy Companies To Invest In Right Now

New drilling techniques used to extract oil and gas from unconventional sources require much more energy than drilling traditional wells. Hence, one of the largest costs for a drilling company is the energy expended to drill. Many drilling sites are not connected to electricity grids, therefore many exploration and production companies have relied on diesel generators to power their operations. Certainly there has to be a better way? Well,Apache (NYSE: APA  ) Chief Technology OfficerMichael S. Bahorich sees natural gas as a much more economical fuel.

About 1% of all drilling operations are powered by natural gas. By shifting all drilling operations over to natural gas, the industry could save as much as $1.6 billion a year. The idea has such appeal that both Haliburton (NYSE: HAL  ) and Schlumberger (NYSE: SLB  ) have said that they would be willing to test sites with Apache for free. In this video, Fool.com contributor Tyler Crowe talks about how the industry could convert to natural-gas-powered operations, and highlights companies to look out for that could benefit from this movement.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Ben Levisohn]

The last six months have been good to coal miners like Alpha Natural Resources (ANR), Walter Energy (WLT), Consol Energy (CNX) and Peabody Energy (BTU), which all gained more than 10%. The last month, not so much, as many have experienced double-digit losses.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

But CSX has responded to the coal crisis in a couple of ways. First, both it and fellow coal-focused railroad Norfolk Southern (NYSE: NSC  ) have ramped up their efforts to export coal, as countries such as China and India remain hungry for low-cost-energy alternatives. Peabody Energy (NYSE: BTU  ) has a natural advantage in supplying Asia because of its deposits in Australia, allowing it to send coal to India and China more cheaply than its peers, especially those with extensive deposits in the eastern half of the U.S. But even eastern producers have managed to boost their exports considerably, and that's helping the railroads that serve coal companies.

Top gainers among energy companies with the S&P 500 index were coal producer Peabody Energy Corp. (BTU) , with shares up 3.1%, and WPX Energy Inc. (WPX) , which rose 2.7%.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

The exact same setup is potentially giving traders a reason to jump into shares of $8.5 billion midstream gas company Western Gas Equity Partners (WGP). Just like Flotek, WGP is forming a textbook channel up. And this week, Western Gas is testing trendline support.

It's a little too early to call WGP's trendline buyable here. At some point, all trends eventually fail -- and when this one does, you don't want to be left holding the bag. A bounce this week will be a good indication that WGP can still catch a bid at this price level. When and if that happens, I'd recommend keeping a tight protective stop in place just below WGP's most recent swing low at $38.

While the 50-day moving average has been crossing paths with WGP quite a bit in the last month, I'd recommend ignoring it. The average hasn't acted as a meaningful support or resistance level to date. In the case of this particular name, it's just not technically relevant.

    Genesis Energy (NYSE: GEL  )
The final stock to get on your dividend watchlist is Genesis Energy. In addition to the assets it already has on the books, Genesis has a number of projects in the pipeline to drive future growth. Genesis estimates that these projects will enable it to provide distribution growth to investors in the low double digits well into the future. Genesis has quite the history to back those estimates up as the company has 31 consecutive quarters of distribution increases, including 26 which were more than 10%.
