    Regional cable TV and Internet provider Cablevision Systems Corporation (CVC) on Friday announced better-than-expected third quarter earnings results, reversing a year-ago loss.

    Cablevision’s Q3 Earnings in Brief
    - Net income totaled $294.6 million, or $1.10 per share, reversing last year’s loss of $3.79 million, or -1 penny per share.
    - Revenue rose 1.8% from last year to $1.57 billion.
    - Analysts expected much lower earnings of just 11 cents per share, on matching revenue.

    Latest Dividend Reiterated; Yield Surpasses Peers
    In its earnings release, Cablevision announced it would continue its dividend payout of 15 cents per share. The latest dividend will be paid on Dec. 13 with an ex-dividend date of Nov. 20. The company has not raised its dividend payout since May of 2011.

    Despite the lack of dividend raise, CVC’s dividend yield of 3.84% compares favorably with other stocks in its industry. Time Warner Cable (TWC) offers a yield of 2.2%, while Comcast Corporation (CMCSA) yields just 1.65%. The average dividend yield for S&P 500 companies is around 2.5%, so Cablevision’s yield is well above both its industry average as well as the wider market average. Still, its lofty yield has come more as a result of poor price performance, rather than dividend increases.

    Shares Rise, but Still Tail Indexes
    Cablevision shares rose more than 2% in early trading on Friday, but the company’s stock performance has lagged the wider markets for quite some time. Year-to-date, CVC has gained about 6%, compared with a 24% gain in the benchmark S&P 500 index. The stock was trading around the $38 level as recently as early 2011, so its dividend yield has risen significantly as its stock price plunged to around $16.

    Andrew Harrer/Bloomberg/Getty Images Comcast CEO Brian Roberts There's no love lost between Comcast (CMCSK) and Netflix (NFLX). The country's largest cable television provider and the world's most successful premium streaming company have been taking shots at each other in recent months, and the bad blood is spilling over into an SEC filing. Comcast mentioned Netflix 283 times in last week's 321-page filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, defending its proposed acquisition of Time Warner Cable (TWC). It's odd to see a single company mentioned that often. Three words more important to Comcast's proposal -- "competition," "monopoly" and "antitrust" -- combined aren't mentioned as often. Battle of the Brands Netflix CEO Reed Hastings isn't afraid to make enemies. It's actually an essential trait when you're trying to be a disruptor. Offering a stand-alone streaming service that doesn't require a hefty cable or satellite television package is going to draw its fair share of critics, and Netflix hasn't had a problem calling out traditional platforms in the past. Most media reports play up that Comcast and Time Warner Cable combine for 33 percent of the country's pay-TV market, but they also combine for a 36 percent chunk of the broadband market. This is a big deal for Netflix since cord-cutters kissing their fat cable bills goodbye often continue to rely on these companies for the connectivity to stream Netflix's growing catalog. In a brilliant move nearly two years ago, Netflix began to publish monthly connectivity speeds of the country's leading Internet providers. As speeds for Comcast customers declined sharply through 2013, Netflix could rightfully argue that the cable-TV giant was trying to make its streaming service less attractive to Comcast customers. It worked. Netflix and Comcast agreed on a deal to improve the Netflix experience for Comcast's Xfinity customers, but it didn't come cheap. Speeds may have improved since bottoming out late

    Leading the charge is cable operator Cablevision (NYSE: CVC  ) again found itself in the spotlight, up 9.6%, following the completion of its sale of Optimum West to Charter Communications (NASDAQ: CHTR  ) for $1.625 billion. While shareholders are likely to be pleased seeing this deal completed, shares are really ramping up in expectation that Charter may make a bid for Cablevision. My stance remains not to chase rumors higher, so I'd suggest watching Cablevision from the sidelines.
