Yes, say the folks at Nomura, who recommend buyingCelgene (CELG), Receptos
(RCPT), Gilead Sciences (GILD), Neurocrine Biosciences (NBIX), and Alexion Pharmaceuticals (ALXN), in that order. Analyst M. Ian Somaiya and team explain why:
October has historically been a weak month for biotech, with the Nasdaq Biotechnology Index underperforming the S&P 500 in 14 out the last 20 years. We believe the current biotech selloff is driven primarily by macro concerns rather than sector fundamentals. We would take advantage of the weakness by focusing on names with near-term catalysts to drive shares, as our quarterly IMS analysis point to no clear winners in the 3Q14 earnings season….
With the October selloff, we believe these catalyst-driven names have the best chance for upside. 1) Celgene rohn drug GED-0301 will have Phase II data at the UEGW conference (18-22 Oct), potentially supporting $2.2bn in WW peak sales. 2)Receptos RPC1063 Phase II data (expected in 4Q14) in ulcerative colitis is a favorable risk/reward event, potentially adding $2.4bn in peak revenues. 3) Gilead Sciences weak 3Q points to upside in 4Q as warehoused patients initiate treatment. Confirmation of rational pricing by AbbVie (ABBV) should help ease HCV price war concerns. 4)Neurocrine Biosciences We expect positive elagolix Phase III results in endometriosis (4Q14), and Phase II uterine fibroid data in 1Q15. 5) Alexion Pharmaceuticals no change in tax guidance and lack of meaningful currency exposure address two concerns heading into 3Q while continued strength of aHUS rollout could provide upside.

Top 10 Performing Companies To Invest In 2014: Ishares Gold Trust (IAU)

Each Share represents a fractional undivided beneficial interest in the net assets of the Trust. The assets of the Trust consist of gold held by the Trust custodian on behalf of the Trust. The sponsor of the Trust is BlackRock Asset Management International Inc. (the Sponsor). The trustee of the Trust is The Bank of New York Mellon (the Trustee) and the custodian of the Trust is JPMorgan Chase Bank, N.A., London branch (the Custodian).
The activities of the Trust are limited to issuing Baskets of Shares in exchange for the gold deposited with the Custodian as consideration; selling gold as necessary to cover the Sponsor fee, Trust expenses not assumed by the Sponsor and other liabilities, and delivering gold in exchange for Baskets of Shares surrendered for redemption. It does not engage in any activities designed to obtain a profit from, or to ameliorate losses caused by, changes in the price of gold.
Advisors' Opinion:- [By Dan Caplinger]
Moreover, historians point to the 1933 executive order that required individuals to deliver gold coins, bullion, and certificates to banks in exchange for regular currency at a rate of $20.67 per ounce as being functionally equivalent to confiscation. With the government proceeding to devalue the dollar to $35 per gold ounce the following year, those who complied with the order suffered a substantial loss of purchasing power. Indeed, many gold investors use that same argument in arguing against bullion ETFs SPDR Gold Trust (NYSEMKT: GLD ) , iShares Gold (NYSEMKT: IAU ) , and iShares Silver Trust (NYSEMKT: SLV ) , preferring instead to take physical possession of their gold and silver to ensure its safekeeping themselves.
- [By Peter Pham]
Although the Fed doubled its bond buying last September, the top gold exchange-traded funds, or ETFs, including SPDR Gold Shares (NYSEMKT: GLD ) , iShares Gold Trust (NYSEMKT: IAU ) , and ETFS Physical Swiss Gold Shares (NYSEMKT: SGOL ) , have dropped around 25% each over the last 12 months, which speaks to gold's extreme vulnerability to QE tapering. Even the mere mention of tapering seems to send gold into a tailspin, as seen with SPDR Gold Shares, which has plunged 24% year to date and also suffered massive losses with its physical holdings. Market Vectors Gold Miners ETF (NYSEMKT: GDX ) has suffered a massive drop of 48% so far in 2013, making it one of the worst-performing ETFs this year.
- [By Sean Williams]
The first method is by purchasing an ETF that closely tracks the underlying price of gold. The iShares Gold Trust (NYSEMKT: IAU ) and SPDR Gold Shares (NYSEMKT: GLD ) are two easy ways of buying into an ETF that holds physical gold without having to go through a physical gold dealer and taking delivery of the product. Also, both ETFs are extremely liquid, which means that you can access your money through your favorite brokerage by buying or selling anytime you need. The downside, of course, is that physical gold offers no dividend yield, so it's all about the price appreciation potential here.
- [By Quoth the Raven]
The other common way to invest is through ETFs such as iShares Gold Trust (IAU), which basically track the price of the commodity by physically purchasing bullion. The ETFs asset price reflect the price as which it trades for. If the underlying asset is silver, the ETF trades proportional to what the silver's worth.
